Markfield Project

Markfield is a community centre based in Haringey with over 1000 users, which promotes the dignity, choice, independence and community inclusion of Disabled people and their families. We are a registered Charity and Limited Company and have been operating since 1979. We provide a range of services which give people access to ordinary and fulfilling life experiences. As well as core support services we are currently exploring new approaches to business development which support people to take risks and achieve aspirations of meaningful employment, reduce reliance on benefits and traditional services, and increase community action.

The Young Foundation

The Young Foundation is working in partnership with the Markfield project to develop new social business activity using our experience in developing exciting and sustainable new social ventures. The successful candidates will be invited to take part in a number of training workshops at the Young Foundation, equipping them with the latest tools and knowledge in the social innovation and investment sector.

The Person

We are looking to recruit two interns for two excitingly different but connected roles. We are after people who are flexible, quick learners, able to think creatively and follow ideas through to completion, problem solver, enjoys working independently, excellent communicator and interested in challenging discrimination. Please identify which role you are applying for:

1.   Training Enterprise Catalyst

a.    Ideally 2 days a week with a preference for Thursdays and Fridays

b.    Role is focussed on developing a new trading arm for the charity to design, create and deliver a wide range of training packages and resources to be sold internationally, promoting the great work and skills of Markfield whilst also generating new income to support the core mission of the organisation

c.    Responsibilities will include lead management of this project alongside the work of the Young Foundation and Markfield Directors

2.   Building Enterprise Catalyst

a.    Ideally 2 days a week with a preference for Mondays and either Tuesday or Wednesday

b.    Role is focussed on developing greater income from the use of the Markfield Project building – designing new services, engaging new community members and raising the profile of the centre

c.    Responsibilities will include lead management of this project alongside the work of the Young Foundation and Markfield Directors



The successful candidates will work together, along with staff at Markfield and Young Foundation in developing a number of new services and in particular will:

·         Lead on the design and delivery of new business opportunities currently being designed by Markfield service users, trustees and staff

·         Identify new projects and services and both lead and design the business plans/strategies

·         Develop the partnerships and marketing strategies

·         Launch new services/products by Spring 2012

·         Work alongside the Directors, staff, service users and trustees and ensure wide ranging engagement

·         Work alongside the Young Foundation to support the overall development of social business development at Markfield


Person Specification


·         Commitment to development of and an understanding of the support needed to develop new charitable and/or business activity

·         Excellent communication skills, written, verbal and interpersonal

·         Good administrative and IT skills (including Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel)

·         Creativity and the ability to work on own initiative and meet deadlines

·         Good research and internet skills

·         Attention to detail

·         Excellent team player

·         Commitment to equal opportunities

·         Access to your own laptop



·         Previous experience in either managing community buildings and/or developing new ideas into sustainable new businesses or projects

·         Experience of working with individuals with a range of physical disabilities and special needs

·         Experience of marketing new projects and/or services including through the use of blogs and social networking tools

·         Interest in developing a career in the social sector

·         Knowledge of UK business/trading laws

·         Experience in developing and leading cross-sector partnerships



This is a voluntary position and is unpaid. Travel expenses of £5 per day will be provided.  


We ask for a minimum commitment of six months for 2-3 days per week. From past internships we have found that a six month commitment is the minimum period of time to ensure that the post is beneficial to both the intern and the development of sustainable new projects. This role will start, subject to agreement; in February 2012 (can be earlier for the right candidate).
